I think the reference to her eating “grass” could well be a mistranslation (the words for grass and herbs are identical in many non-English languages, including Russian), or even a misperception on behalf of Vladimir – I think he didn’t know the different plants and so it was all “green stuff” or “grass” to him.
It could be actual grass too, but I don’t imagine she’d eat a lot of that somehow…
